What Affects Kitchen Cabinet Price in Klang Valley?
Understand the real cost drivers behind kitchen cabinet quotations: length, material, hardware, countertop and site conditions.
Why Kitchen Cabinet Prices Vary So Much
One of the most common renovation frustrations is receiving two kitchen cabinet quotations — one at RM12,000 and another at RM26,000 — for what looks like the same scope.
The difference is usually not profit margin. It is specification. Two kitchens that look visually similar in a 3D render can differ substantially in board material, hardware brand, edge finishing, countertop inclusion and installation scope.
Understanding what drives cost helps you compare quotations properly.
Cabinet Size and Layout
Larger kitchen layouts with more cabinet runs, tall pantry units and island storage naturally require more material and labour hours.
An L-shaped kitchen with a centre island will cost significantly more than a single straight wall of base and upper cabinets.
Board Material and Thickness
Cabinet board type is one of the largest cost variables. Plywood is stronger and more moisture-resistant than particle board (melamine board), and typically costs more.
Board thickness also matters. 18mm is standard; thinner boards reduce cost but affect structural durability over time.
Hardware Brand and Quality
Hardware — hinges, drawer runners, lift mechanisms and soft-close systems — can vary widely in cost depending on brand.
Premium hardware brands like Blum or Hettich cost more than generic alternatives but typically perform better over years of daily use. Cheap hinges and runners are a common source of long-term frustration.
Countertop and Backsplash
Countertops are often quoted separately from cabinet work. The choice between quartz, sintered stone, solid surface or granite creates a wide price range.
Always confirm whether countertop supply and installation is included in a kitchen cabinet quotation.
What a Proper Quotation Should Include
Before accepting any quotation, confirm these items are clearly stated:
- ✅ Board material type and thickness
- ✅ Hardware brand specified
- ✅ Countertop included or excluded
- ✅ Sink and hob cut-outs included
- ✅ Old cabinet dismantling included
- ✅ Electrical socket relocation included
- ✅ Plumbing modification included
- ✅ Delivery and access included
- ✅ Timeline and production schedule
- ✅ Warranty scope and duration
Common Budgeting Mistakes
- Comparing total price without matching specification line by line
- Assuming the cheapest quote is the best value
- Forgetting to ask about hidden costs like electrical and plumbing changes
- Planning budget only for cabinets and not countertop, backsplash and appliances
- Not confirming warranty terms before signing
